If you’re interested in Moringa Oleifera in India, you may be wondering about the basics of how Moringa Oleifera cultivators get their products, harvest this plant, and provide customers with Moringa Oleifera leaves, pods, and seeds.
Initial Planting Of Moringa Oleifera Cuttings
Typically, Moringa Oleifera cultivators use cuttings to propagate new fields – usually sourced from existing Moringa plants. Moringa Oleifera growers typically plant new cuttings at very high densities, placing them at a distance of only 15 x 15 cm apart.
In most cases, Moringa Oleifera pods will not grow within the first year of the tree being planted, though in favorable conditions it is possible for them to grow within 6-8 months of the cutting being planted.
It’s important to note, too, that Moringa Oleifera is typically not grown for both leaves and pods simultaneously. Instead, one or the other is harvested. Harvesting both leaves and pods from the Moringa Oleifera tree will cause undue stress – and can even damage or kill the plant.
Harvesting Moringa Oleifera Seeds & Pods
Moringa Oleifera cultivation for Moringa Oleifera seeds and pods usually begins after the first year. For the first 1-2 years, around 300 pods are produced per tree, and this grows to up to 400-500 by the third year. A healthy tree will produce more than 1,000 pods per year.
Depending on how densely the Moringa Oleifera growers plant their crops, it’s usually possible to achieve a yield of about 31 tonnes of pods per year per hectare when growing Moringa Oleifera in India.
These pods have a variety of uses. They can be eaten fresh, or the seeds within can be extracted and roasted, or pressed into “ben oil,” a colorless oil that’s highly prized in the cosmetics industry.
Harvesting Moringa Oleifera Leaves
Compared to Moringa Oleifera pods, Moringa Oleifera leaves can be harvested much sooner. Leaves and stems can be harvested from the Moringa Oleifera plant as soon as 60 days after it is initially planted – with a total of about 7 harvests per year. Usually, one hectare of land will yield about 6 tons of fresh plant material per year.
During each harvest, the plant is cut back to within 60 centimetres of the ground, then the remaining plant matter is dried and processed. It can be used as animal feed, and is also used in supplements, herbal teas and other such products due to its high nutrient content and antioxidant properties.
